Farmville, created by Zynga, Inc., is the most popular game on the online social networking site Facebook. In the game, players plant and tend different crops, buy and raise animals, harvest fruit trees, and help out neighbors. The goal is to earn money and level up by gaining experience.
Players start out with a small farm and a small amount of farm coins with which to buy things. There are decorations for the farm, crops, animals, trees, and other things in the store to buy. Many things cost a lot of money, so players must earn more money if they want to buy expensive houses or other special items. Money can be earned by harvesting from animals, crops, or trees. Items "ripen" over a certain amount of real time, so players must check in on the game at frequent intervals. Crops can wither and die, and therefore reward no coins, if they are not harvested within a certain time. Animals and trees will not wither.
Money can also be earned by completing collections, receiving ribbons, and helping neighbors. Collections are groups of 6 special objects that you get from doing everyday chores. Once you get all the items in a collection, you turn it in for experience, coins, and a special gift.
Players receive ribbons in many ways. For example, a player will get a ribbon by harvesting a large number of vegetable crops. Once the player gets the first ribbon, they can get three subsequent ribbons by harvesting an even larger number of vegetables. Each ribbon gives increasing rewards as well. Players can help neighbors, who are their real Facebook friends, by either fertilizing their crops, or by collecting a bonus when a friend has a special event.
Crafting Cottages
Players can choose to place a crafting cottage on their farm, which allows them to choose a craft to practice. The three cottages available are a bakery, a winery, and a spa. In the cottages, players use bushels of various fruits, vegetables, and other crops to make recipes. Bakery recipes usually use grains, such as wheat, while winery items are made with grapes. The spa often uses flowers and aloe vera in its recipes.
Players collect bushels either from their neighbors, or by growing and harvesting certain crops on their own farms. Each recipe requires a certain number and combination of bushels, and each craft has a total of 15 recipes to choose from and level up. A recipe takes 6 hours to make, and will create 2-4 of an item for the player to sell to neighbors.
