Every year, during late June and early July, World of Warcraft players can celebrate the Midsummer Fire Festival. The festival ends around the 4th of July, which is Independence Day in the United States.
Flame Achievements
If players complete certain achievements, they can get The Flame Warden title, which counts towards the "What a Long Strange Trip It's Been" achievement, which rewards a violet proto-drake. This achievement is achieved by completing 8 holiday achievements during different holidays throughout the year. One such achievement is during the Hallow's End event in October.
There are achievements for extinguishing and honoring all the flames on all the continents. You honor the flames located by all your own faction's towns, and extinguish the flames at the opposing faction's towns. Extinguishing the opposite faction's flames flags you for PvP, so it can be a little dangerous for lower level players. For a list of fires on two of the continents, please read "Extinguishing the Eastern Kingdoms" and "The Flame Warden of Kalimdor."
There is also a quest to steal the flames from each of the opposite faction's five capital cities. Better to do in a large group, the quest involves sneaking into the cities, locating the flame, and looting it. Whether or not players make it back out alive is irrelevant; as long as they have the flame in their bags they can complete the quest. For certain classes who can go stealth or invisible, such as rogues, this quest could probably be done alone.
Daily Quests
There are some daily quests for players to complete for gold and experience points. Players also receive a number of Burning Blossoms, which are the currency to buy special items during the Midsummer Fire Festival. The Burning Blossoms can also be used for a temporary buff, although most players will use them as currency to buy the limited time items available only during the holiday event.
Players can complete the More Torch Catching, and More Torch Tossing as daily quests, after completing the initial Torch Catching and Torch Tossing quests. These quests are available at either Ironforge or Orgrimmar, which are the starting points for the Midsummer events. After a little bit of practice, they will be easy to complete daily for rewards.
There is also a daily boss fight that is only available during the festival. Ahune is located in the Slave Pens of the Coilfang Reservoir. Level 80 players may be able to solo the Slave Pens, but Ahune is pretty hard to be soloed, or even completed with a smaller than usual group. Beating Ahune rewards the player with a special summer tabard. The quest can only be completed once during the festival, but the boss can be killed every day for loot.
Special Items
There are many special items that can be acquired during the Midsummer Fire Festival. There is a Captured Flame companion pet, and a set of clothing to wear. Players can use their Burning Blossoms to purchase food that gives the player a temporary buff. There is a juggling torch that players can buy and throw, as well as a handful of summer petals to shower another player with.
Killing Ahune allows players to loot the Ice Chest, which has some level 70 rewards in it. Some cloaks and a dagger may drop. A companion pet might be available, as well as an enchanting formula. Some snowballs and a drink might also drop from the chest.
The Midsummer Fire Festival is a nice diversion for players of World of Warcraft. They can get some easy gold or xp by completing daily quests, or get some special loot as well. For more information about the Midsummer Fire Festival, visit World of Warcraft's official website.
